AT THE CLARENS GOLF AND TROUT ESTATE
The view from all the windows either stretches uninterrupted to the Maluti Mountains or looks over a pristine Golf Course. Perfect for lunch or in our case a Romantic dinner.
We chose to have sundowners at the bar before dinner as we had both had busy days. The Owner and Executive Chef: Michael Scheepers introduced himself and both of us were immediately struck by his amazingly calm presence... From that moment on we felt as though the meal was a dinner amongst familiar friends... At home in a beautifully decorated and comfortable space.
Hors d'oeuvres: Chicken livers that melted with a very more-ish tomato, onion and peri-peri sauce.
Dinner: Eisbein, tender on the inside - crispy crackling on the outside. Delicately balanced with Sauerkraut and a side serving of mustard.
Lamb Curry, exceptionally tender lamb in a curry that teased our senses. I would definitely order the Eisbein again, but I would also have the Lamb Curry and yet I would love to experience something new from Brambleberry's menu.
Our waiter Antjie was genuinely friendly and attended to us perfectly.
Meeting Chef Michael and having a meal at Brambleberry is an experience not to be missed when visiting Clarens.
The Trout & Mallard _ Kiara
15km towards Golden Gate on the right hand side.
The Wine: I did not feel like anything soapy (alkaline) or acidic (like vinegar). I am also no expert, however the Swartberg Dry Red (R62) went very well with our meal of red meat, and it was served professionally
The Food: I enjoy my steak rare and the Chefs Fillet was very soft and grilled perfectly.
The Carpetbagger served with smoked mussels was grilled to a perfect medium rare as ordered.
"So many restaurants dont give your meat the attention it deserves, especially fine Free State beef."
The Chef: Mac has put thought into his dishes. The Haloumi cheese and bacon on the Chefs Fillet and the smoked mussels on the Carpetbagger were done in such a way to not distract you away from the star of the meal and complimented the meat very nicely. The servings of Chips and baked potato were not overwhelming either.
For Dessert: A thick Don Pedro, restaurants can make them too thin and you have to rush. This Don Pedro was very nice.
In Conclusion: A little bit out of Clarens, a little bit extra but sometimes this makes all the difference, and it certainly did at The Trout & Mallard.
